Council-sponsored opportunities are activities provided by paid and volunteer staff and open to girls throughout the council.  These opportunities offer a chance for your troop or individual girl to meet other girls from within the council's jurisdiction.

LOW ROPES ADVENTURE CHALLENGE - Woodhaven

Ages

(5th grade & up)

Girls progress laterally on a course made of cables and ropes, with the safety of spotters.  One chance to finish the course supports determination, trust and team-building. By request dates available by calling Kelda Heitkamp.

HIGH ROPES ADVENTURE CHALLENGE - Woodhaven

7th grade & up

Girls challenge themselves 25 feet in the air as they make their way across a system of ropes and cables.  Secured in a harness, participants will enjoy a zip line descent. By request dates available by calling Kelda Heitkamp.

EARTH AND SKY TRY-IT - by request only

Ages

Girls will dig in soil to determine the differences in content and animal life as they dig deeper. They will perform experiments to learn about heat transfer, evaporation, and condensation. Girls will make observations of erosion, weathering, cloud formation, and animals of flight.

OIL UP BADGE - by request only

Ages

What do carpet, gasoline and body lotion have in common? They all contain oil/petroleum. Come and learn about the characteristics of this natural resource and how our need for oil impacts our lives and the environment. We'll create an oil spill and attempt to clean it up as girls do fun experiments to expand their knowledge on this valuable raw material.

BUCKEYE TRAILS AREA OPPORTUNITIES

HIKER BADGE

Ages

Earn your Junior Hiker Badge! Explore the natural wonders around Camp Greene in this two-day course on hiking and hiking safety. Each day will include a rigorous hike so participants should be in good physical condition. Please bring a sack lunch, trail snacks, a day pack and water bottle on both Saturday and Sunday. Dress for the weather, wear pants, walking shoes or hiking boots. Leaders: be sure to cover pages 129-133 in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook and pages 102-103 in the badge book or pages 122-124 in the Cadette Handbook.

ORIENTEERING

Ages:  

Explore Camp Whip Poor Will as you use your map and compass to find hidden treasures around camp. Course includes an introduction to map and compass use, and GPS technology. This program will fulfill some of the "Finding Your Way" badge and "Orienteering" IP requirements. Please dress for the weather and bring your own water, whistle and compass (these are available in the Buckeye Trails Resource Library). Please wear good hiking or walking boots.

CHALLENGE DAY

Ages:  

Spend the day completing the Low and High Challenge Courses at Camp Rolling Hills or Camp Whip Poor Will. You will work in a team of girls your age to complete elements on the Low Challenge Course in the morning. After a break for lunch, you will move on to the High Challenge Course. Working with a buddy, you will climb 35 feet into the trees and complete the course. After a quick trip down the zip line, you will be back on the ground! Bring a sack lunch, drink and water bottle.
