LOW ROPES ADVENTURE CHALLENGE - Woodhaven

Ages

(5th grade & up)

HIGH ROPES ADVENTURE CHALLENGE - Woodhaven

Ages

7th grade & up

Girls challenge themselves 25 feet in the air as they make their way across a system of ropes and cables.  Secured in a harness, participants will enjoy a zip line descent. By request dates available by calling Kelda Heitkamp.

EARTH AND SKY TRY-IT - by request only

Ages

Girls will dig in soil to determine the differences in content and animal life as they dig deeper. They will perform experiments to learn about heat transfer, evaporation, and condensation. Girls will make observations of erosion, weathering, cloud formation, and animals of flight.

OIL UP BADGE - by request only

Ages

What do carpet, gasoline and body lotion have in common? They all contain oil/petroleum. Come and learn about the characteristics of this natural resource and how our need for oil impacts our lives and the environment. We'll create an oil spill and attempt to clean it up as girls do fun experiments to expand their knowledge on this valuable raw material.

BUCKEYE TRAILS AREA OPPORTUNITIES

HIKER BADGE

Ages

Earn your Junior Hiker Badge! Explore the natural wonders around Camp Greene in this two-day course on hiking and hiking safety. Each day will include a rigorous hike so participants should be in good physical condition. Please bring a sack lunch, trail snacks, a day pack and water bottle on both Saturday and Sunday. Dress for the weather, wear pants, walking shoes or hiking boots. Leaders: be sure to cover pages 129-133 in the Junior Girl Scout Handbook and pages 102-103 in the badge book or pages 122-124 in the Cadette Handbook.

ORIENTEERING

Ages:  

Explore Camp Whip Poor Will as you use your map and compass to find hidden treasures around camp. Course includes an introduction to map and compass use, and GPS technology. This program will fulfill some of the "Finding Your Way" badge and "Orienteering" IP requirements. Please dress for the weather and bring your own water, whistle and compass (these are available in the Buckeye Trails Resource Library). Please wear good hiking or walking boots.

CHALLENGE DAY

Ages:  

Spend the day completing the Low and High Challenge Courses at Camp Rolling Hills or Camp Whip Poor Will. You will work in a team of girls your age to complete elements on the Low Challenge Course in the morning. After a break for lunch, you will move on to the High Challenge Course. Working with a buddy, you will climb 35 feet into the trees and complete the course. After a quick trip down the zip line, you will be back on the ground! Bring a sack lunch, drink and water bottle.

ARCHERY - BUTTERWORTH Ages: 
Participate in a three-hour archery session at the Camp Butterworth indoor archery range.  Register your girls to learn the basics of archery from a certified instructor.  Girls will spend time learning the rules of the range, shooting techniques, and then shoot a few rounds.  Each session will last 3 hours with no more than 20 girls per session.  This will allow for maximum shooting time per girl.

There is no better place to learn about nature and the outdoors then at Camp. Whether it is exploring the woods, investigating a creek, using your sense to discover nature, or experience the out of doors at night, you and your troop are sure to learn new and exciting information in these hands on and exciting activities. Troops may choose a Nature Hike, Creek Peek, Sensory Hike, Night Hike, or Wildflower Walk. All hikes are designed to last approximately 2 hours.

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE EDUCATION -ZIP LINE

Ages: (12 and up)

Participants must be 12 years old at the time of the program opportunity.  Take a trip down the 396 foot zip line.  Each participant will be fitted with a safety harness and helmet and attached to a dynamic belay system.  They will then climb a 30 foot pole to the zip platform.  Then take the plunge and zip more than 350 feet to the end.  This is a great adventure for the thrill seeker.

Although this opportunity is done in a group setting, its primary objective is to challenge individuals, mentally, physically and emotionally.  After completing this activity you will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment.  Other group members will be there for support and encouragement.  Participants are fitted with a safety harness and helmet and start with a safety class.  Then they will climb the 35 foot climbing wall to reach the high elements.  Complete elements like the postmans walk, balance beam, and multi-vine.  If you are really adventurous you can add the zip line to complete this experience.

CABIN FEVER/TROOP CAMP TRAINING

Ages

What could be better than taking Camp Certification training at camp with your troop? This learning opportunity will teach both leaders and girls basic outdoor skills including various methods of outdoor cooking, knife safety, fire building, knot tying, Leave No Trace Skills, orienteering, and more. Camp staff will supervise campers while trainers review policies and paperwork with leaders. Each troop must follow girl/adult ratio regulations and stay for the entire program to receive credit. (Program available only for third grade Brownies or older and their Leaders) For the ultimate camping experience attend the May Cabin Fever where you and your troop will be housed in the tents for the weekend.  Junior troops only!

PONY PALS TRY-IT

Ages:

Are you crazy about horses? Pony Pals is for the Brownie who loves horses and wants to learn more about them. Spend your day at Camp Libbey learning about the different breeds of horses, horse equipment and why horses do the things they do. Make a horse craft to take home and top off the day by meeting Camp Libbey's own miniature horses! Girls will complete the requirements for the Camp Libbey Council’s own Pony Pals Try-it. This workshop does not include riding, it is a ground clinic only.

TROOP RIDING CLINICS

This is a time for your troop to experience horseback riding at Camp Libbey. Your troop will receive a basic introduction to horses and continue with a ring ride or trail riding adventure. All riders must have long pants and boots/shoes with a ½ inch heel. Camp Libbey provides helmets and trained riding staff. Riding clinics last approximately one hour. ARCHERY AND TARGET SPORTS - Level 1 & 2

Work with a Certified Archery Instructor as you learn the safety rules and etiquette of archery and spend time in target practice. Also, you can sign up to try your hand at other target sports such as sling shots and even tomahawk throwing. CANOEING or KAYAKING

Ages:

Work on basic canoeing skills with a certified instructor during this workshop. Learn about safety, paddle strokes, and get some canoeing experience. This is a great opportunity for beginning canoeists to gain confidence and experience. This is a 3 hour workshop which requires troop transportation off site. JR. NATURALIST EXPLORER DAY

Ages:   (age 11)

The Junior Naturalist program is one in which girls are able to learn about, explore, and teach others about the environment and nature. Girls ages 11-17 are able to participate in this program and advance through the levels of Explorer, Guide, Ranger, Conservationist, and Environmental Steward as they earn patches, learn to care for animals, teach classes to younger girls, acquire certifications, go on trips, and complete service projects. If you are an 11 year old Junior Girl Scout and think this is something you would like to do as a Cadet/Senior Girl Scout come join us at this event. You will learn more about the program as well as do things including, help Camp Libbey in a service project, learn about the animals in the Environmental Center and how to care for them, and even get a little practice teaching others about some of the things you learn, as you work towards earning your first Jr. Naturalist Patch.

NIGHT FAIR

Ages:  

Calling all kids that like to stay up late; if you like the night time, come explore it with us at camp and work on earning the Sky Search badge. It should be a great night to view the moon through one of our telescopes and do activities like learn about constellations and how to find them, see if you can spot another planet, venture into the woods in the dark, and other fun and exciting night time activities. End the evening with a slumber party and movie. Adults have the option of sleeping in their own cabin, as staff stay with the girls for the night! Wrap up this exciting event with a brunch before you head home the next day. Troops may bring no more than 1 adult for every 5 girls attending.

BACKPACKING - PART I - AN INTRODUCTION

Participants will learn the basics of backpacking in this fun-filled workshop. Learn about proper equipment, clothing, food, and conditioning, as well as how to pack, adjust, and put on your own backpack, put up a tent, use a camp stove, and how to use a compass. The workshop will include a short hike with the backpacks. Adults wishing to carry a pack also need to pay the registration fee. “Backpacking Part One” is a prerequisite to the Backpacking Part Two – Weekend Workshop. Girls will complete most requirements for the Backpacking Interest Project Patch.

BACKPACKING - PART II - WEEKEND WORKSHOP

Ages:  

Experience backpacking and all it has to offer by joining us on a backpacking excursion through the wilderness. Girls and adults registering for this program must have completed the backpacking Introduction program. The group will meet at Oak Openings Metro park outside of Toledo for the weekend to backpack up to 15 miles and spend an overnight on the trail. Girls will finish requirements for the backpacking Interest Project Patch. A good pair of boots/hiking shoes, proper socks, and sleeping bag/bed roll are required. NO JEANS or TENNIS SHOES. Backpacks, stoves, pots, tents, and backpacking food is supplied. Backpacking Part One and Two are prerequisites for Summer Backpacking Trips.
